Four weeks of Letters and Pictures...

JUNE 9, 2014

AYOOOO. This past Saturday we had a branch activity that we prepared as a surprise for the members. We did a reenactment of the Iron Rod in the chapel and had a rope cord running through the hallways and then in the classrooms we had temptations. One of them was our second counselor eating doritos and watching Iron Man 3, another was Hermanos watching the World Cup, and another was Hna Garcia and I with two huge cakes. It was hilarious! We weren't positive if it was all going to work out, but it did! We got a ton of members to the cake. Hahah. At the end we decorated the room with a "Tree of Life" that was really just a fake Christmas tree with small yellow balloons all over it. We also had a plate of these white bon bons as their fruit.
It was so fun to see all the members go through. The Torres family went through all together and the mom, Rosa, kept stressing out that her whole family wasn't going to make it through to the end all together. Sadly, she lost her son Seba to the fútbol. I will send some of the pictures I took.
Also, one of our investigators told us that she thought mormons couldn't eat chocolate or drink soda along with the coffee, tea and alcohol and that it had been on her mind for a while but she was afraid to ask. Who knows how long that has been holding her back!
This Friday we have a huge conference in Los Angeles to say Goodbye to Presidente Martinez. It is so weird to think that he won't be our President after this week. But it has been really awesome to see our mission really dedicate ourselves to the work lately. We have been trying to focus on "changing the details." I have seen it make a huge difference. It is so true that the small acts and decisions determine the course of my mission. The simple, small thoughts, actions and words make up who we are. I am trying to better myself in that aspect. To change the details to be more focused and diligent in the work.
Hna Garcia and I have seen a lot of blessings with the branch and with our investigators lately and it is a testimony to me of the importance of the small and simple actions and thoughts. If we can just align our desires with those of the Lord then we will be so happy and succesful.
I love you guys!
Love always,
Hna Chalmers

The zone activity we had today. we played soccer and volleyball and then...
...ate some peruvian food the elders made.

JUNE 2, 2014

Hey guys! I am praying for you all this week! I can't believe Cam is already heading out. Elder and Hermana Chalmers 2.0!
Yesterday at church we had all kinds of great experiences. One of our investigators, Cecilia finally came to church! We were so so happy. A member, Rita, went and practically pulled her out of bed and brought her breakfast on the go so they wouldn't be late. I am so grateful for that lady. Cecilia stayed for all three hours and during our gospel principles class we had a lesson on gifts of the Spirit and she came to the realization through a question she asked that what she had felt in her church wasn't really the spirit of God because she hadn't felt completely right about what they were doing and that she needed the correct authority in her baptism for it to be valid. It was amazing. The Spirit was testifying to her and teaching her as she asked and answered her own questions.
Also, in sacrament we went pianoless since we came a little late because we were getting an investigator and so the Hermana leading starting singing the song to the tune of a different hymn and the congregation got about halfway through the song before we all realized we were singing the wrong tune. The branch president had to get up and stop everyone so we could start over. There were even a couple Hermanas that shouted out what they thought the actual tune was from where they were sitting in the congregation for the director coupled with the other half of the members shushing all the kids that were laughing, it was hilarious. President Brand even explained that "hermanos y hermanas, we aren't professionals, we are all just trying to do our best" for all the non members so they wouldn't think the mormons are a hot mess. hahah. There is never a dull moment at church over here.
One of our favorite members, Hermano Rigoberto, is the older guy who has a lot of medical problems. He has to walk with this big cane and have someone help him, but he still walks to church every Sunday with his wife, Juana. He gives us lunch the day after he gets paid every month and tells us stories of when he was branch president back in the glory days and all kinds of hilarious and slightly innapproriate jokes. I think Dad is going to be like Hno Rigoberto when he is older. Anyway, he bore his testimony in church yesterday. It took him a couple minutes to walk up to the podium, with a bit of help from some Hermanos, but he was just smiling the whole time. As I was listening to him share his testimony and thought about how I have never once heard him complain. He has all the excuses in the world to be grumpy or irritated but he isn't at all. It makes me think of Elder Uchtdorf's talk about gratitude and choosing to be grateful IN our situations and circumstances. I have seen that it really is true this past week that our happiness is our choice. It can be independant of what is happening around us if we want it to be. We were put to the test this week on Wednesday when a huge thunder, wind, rain storm hit Arauco. I have never seen or felt rain that strong in my life! My umbrella was completely broken by the end of the night. There were mini lakes in all the streets. Hna Garcia and I just had to laugh about so many crazy things. Trucks splashing the crud out of us, our umbrellas turning inside out in front of a crowd of people and looking like hobos when we got into a house. Could've been the worst day ever, but it actually was pretty fun and definitely something I will always remember. That night was pretty wild, too. The wind and rain and thunder kept waking us up. Hermana Garcia said that in the middle of the night I frantically asked her if the power went out a few times, too. Haha. I dont remember.
Anyway, good luck this Wednesday! I love you guys! POY
Love always,
Megs

Hey Team,                                                                                                                     MAY 26, 2014
I still can't believe Cam graduated this week. You are so old! Looks like you guys have just been partying it up.
My new companion, Hermana Garcia is awesome. She is 20 as well but is really short and tiny. Everyone thinks that she is a younger member that is out on splits with me. Haha. We get along well and I am learning a lot from her. She helps me out with Spanish and I help her out with English so it works out great.
This week we saw some pretty crazy stuff in Arauco. For example-
We taught a lesson to an investigator, Marisela, while her husband was giving a guy a tattoo in the same room!
We were on our way to a lesson with this couple who are very active evangelicals and had told us in the lesson before that they went to this one church, but didn't like the pastor so they decided to create their own group and hold services at their house (great apostasy, am I right?). So anyway, we were walking to their house and there was music playing really loudly that you could hear from down the street. Well, as we got closer, turns out it was their house and we had walked into their church services. Hna Garcia and I were standing their, jaws dropped, staring into the window where we could see a bunch of ladies singing, crying, dancing and yelling to the ceiling while their little children stood by looking pretty scared and to make matters worse, as we were standing their an inactive member that lived close by walked right on in to join! Never seen anything like it before.
We went out and worked with one of the youth in our branch, Sebastian, all afternoon on Saturday and turns out that nobody wanted anything to do with the missionaries that day. We couldn't get into any houses! But Seba stayed with us the whole time as we went through all the plans we had. It was really cool to see him working hard as well. We knocked on some doors and after the doors where no one answered he would casually leave a pass a long card on the doorstep. I love the members here. You guys should go out with the missionaries!
- Yesterday I gave a talk in sacrament about being spiritually prepared by doing the simple things- reading scriptures, praying and going to church every Sunday. I mentioned Cam and that he is leaving on his mission soon and it choked me up a little bit. I can't wait for him to get out there! The mission is not something I could have ever expected and it makes me really happy and proud to know that Cam gets to do the same thing at the same time.
Love you guys!

MAY 19, 2014

We found out about transfers today! I am staying in Arauco and Hermana Henderson is going to Temuco Cautin! Where I started out! Hermana Garcia is coming here. I have never met her before but I am pretty sure she is from Guatemala. It is definitely going to be weird getting used to a different companion especially after being with Hna Henderson for a while and not living with anyone else but I am excited for something new!
This past week we focused a lot on finding new people to teach and it was a lot of fun. We found some really awesome people. One lady, Flor, was the craftiest Chilena I have ever met. Almost all of the decorations outside and inside her house were homemade. She had some hubcabs she had painted like flowers and wind chimes made out of keys and all kinds of cool stuff. We also met Marisela, a Colombian that moved here 2 years ago because she married a Chileno who we love. Oh! And we found Pamela, this lady who, when we met her, told us she had 3 sweet little daughters that she loves so much. Well, come to find out they are all dogs! It was hilarious.
This week we also took a trip to Concepcion because Hna Henderson had to get an xray of her heel and it was kind of a shock after living in Arauco and being so used to a small town. We were so overwhelmed with all the cars and people and noise.
Also, earlier this week we had a pretty crazy experience with some recent converts, V and M. They are a very interesting couple. They got married a little less than a year ago and it was both of their second marriages. V is in his 30s and M in her 50s. Anyway, we felt like we needed to stop by and visit them and when they opened the door we could tell they had been fighting or something. So we sat down and started to talk with them and they both just started arguing like crazy and about how hard it is to be married and all these things. Victor also told us that he had a dream about me and my companion that we were telling him to put on this metal armor so he could carry this heavy backpack he had (the Sunday before Hna Henderson and I taught gospel principles class in church and taught about Repentance. We used the example of the backpack full of heavy things and then taking them all out to show repentance and forgiveness). At many points during the time we were at their house I just had to pray that the Spirit would help me know what to say because I had no idea. After a bit they started to change and calm down and look more at the things they could improve on instead of all the negatives. It was interesting to see how it honestly didn't matter who was more right or who could prove their case better. I can see a lot clearer now how the gospel really is the solution for all of our problems, for M's and V's as well. When we put the gospel first everything else will work itself out.
Sometimes as missionaries I think we are put into situations that our past experiencies don't cover and we don't fully understand so we can learn how to rely on the Spirit to guide us to help others. I felt that with V and M because of course I have never been married or had problems like that. But it didn't matter because it isn't really me that is there to help them anyway. I need to do my best to let the Spirit work through me because that is what will really guide them to change in the end.
Love you guys!!
Love,
Megs

I loved talking to you guys yesterday! Best day ever! Hna Henderson and I talked all about how great it was the rest of the night and we just barely bought our groceries with Dad's healthy advice in mind.
Love you guys tons!

May 5, 2014
I am going to SKYPE you guys in a week so I won't go into too much crazy detail about this week but
I received a KILLER gift for my birthday...RAIN RAIN RAIN. There was a temporal Wednesday, which is when there is just a ton of mist, rain and wind. It was wild. We had our zone conference that day and the tradition in Latin America is to get your birthday cake shoved in your face. So that is what happened to me. Ha!
I think more than anything this week I have received a stronger testimony of obedience and how it directly correlates with blessings. Sometimes I think I am pretty stubborn and want to do things in my own way but I can now see that the Lord always knows best, even if we don't understand all the reasons at first. That is really put to the test on the mission because there are a lot of rules to follow, but the thing is that the only reason we have these commandments is for our happiness. Heavenly Father doesn't want to punish us or make us suffer. He knows exactly what will bring us the most peace and happiness. Hna Henderson and I are trying hard to be exactly obedient and it is tough, but we have seen a lot of blessings, especially this past Sunday.
We had worked really, really hard to get our investigators to church and it turned out that last minute Patricia got called in to work in the morning because her boss was sick so she and her son Alonso couldn't come and then Brunilda got sick. We were pretty bummed and we had a bit of time before church so we stopped by this 13 yr old investigator, Maria, who we had been working with on and off to invite her last minute. Her mom said she was sleeping but that she would tell her and we said we would be back after sacrament to get her.
We got to church alone, trying not to be discouraged and I was playing the piano so I was sitting up on the stand when halfway through sacrament I see through the side doors Maria's long black curly hair pass by the little windows and then she walked in. She told Hermana Henderson that she knew that we would have to leave church to come get her so she just decided to come to us and that she had woken up feeling like she wanted to go to church so it worked out great that we had stopped by to remind her. Wahoooo! It was so awesome. Seeing her walk in was such a sweet moment for me. I knew Heavenly Father was watching over us and Maria and that when we work our hardest He is with us every step of the way, He takes care of the rest. Although other plans fell through, everything worked out so that Maria was able to come.

I love you guys and cant wait to talk to you!!
Love always,
Hermana Megs

pics of me getting caked in the face and with my birthday cake the Elders that we work with here in Arauco bought me and also a pic with my birthday rain. (April 30, 2014)

Happy Birthday to my Mom today!

HEY!                                                                                                                       April 28, 2014
This week Hermana Henderson and I really worked hard and it was really awesome to be able to look back and know that we did everything we could. It's true that the Lord will take care of things if we do everything we can with a good attitude.
This past week we had a Family Home Evening with the branch and we did a huge easter egg hunt except PSYCH, the eggs had questions written on them with scriptures to find the answers. It was actually a bunch of fun. We had some members get offended because they said it wasn't fair because we hid everything too high so all of the shorter latinos couldn't find them. haha. I AM NOT TALL.
We also started some English classes this week.
We have this investigator, Maria, who is 13 and really awesome. She is very logical and has a lot of questions. The other day she asked us how the world would've been different if Christ hadn't suffered for our sins. I really liked that question. At first it made me think about how without the atonement there would be no hope, no life after death, no chance to change or be better, no real happiness. Then I was thinking about how there are people who don't repent and take advantage of the Atonement, and for them it is pretty similar. They are still able to be resurrected, but the greatest blessing of the Atonement isn't even received. Christ already suffered for our sins and sometimes we don't take advantage of that. We forget that he already paid the price and all He wants is for us to repent so we can change. He is rooting for us all the time. I have seen the Atonement work in my life especially in the sense that it has helped me to grow and change and that despite all of my weaknesses I can still become better and start over everyday.

I'm sorry I will write more next week!

AND Happy Birthday on the 25th to my Dear Old Dad!

Ayooooo!                                                                                                              April 21, 2014
- Earlier this week Hermana Henderson got stung by a bee on her side and we were talking to the Elders that we work with here in Arauco, they are from Argentina and Peru, and Elder Navarro was trying to tell us that the only solution was that either I had to suck out the venom by mouth to get it all out and if I didn't want to do that then we would have to go buy a breast pump to get it all out. Hahaha, we definitely didn't go for either and Hna Henderson is still alive.
- This drunk guy chased me when we were walking in the plaza with his duck lips fully puckered ready for a kiss. Ironic enough, with it being a long weekend here for Easter there were a bunch of drunk people all over.
- This lady we contacted told me I look like a doctor, so that explains why I was studying fonoaudiologia. Haha thanks.
- When we were walking around a guy yelled at us, "HELLO BROTHER!" I thought Cam would appreciate that.
- We had the funniest lessons on Saturday with some members. We went out with this mom and daughter that were baptized about 3 years ago. The lesson was with a new investigator we had found contacting. Hna Luisa, the member, and this investigator, Elena, really hit it off and starting talking about how, "Dios es un hombre." so we had to clear that one up. Haha. But it turned out being a really great lesson for Elena. Her and Hna Luisa had a ton of things in common and it helped her out a lot to see that normal people are members of the church and see how much it blesses their lives. Members are so important! We really can't do this work without them and their testimonies.
- We had a lesson with this couple that isn't baptized but have been coming to church for a couple years. She is legally married to someone else and they are still trying to figure out everything with the divorve (I may have told you guys this before?) Anyway, in our lesson it hit me again that I am a missionary. I was sitting there with my companion listening to a grown up couple talk about their fears and doubts for the future. They trusted us to talk about those things, but the thing is that it isn't really us at all. We are just two young girls from the United States. It is our calling, the Holy Ghost we have. We are representatives of Jesus Christ doing His work and when we try and do it without Him it doesn't work at all, Why would it? When we have faith in Him and work with His spirit present there are so many miracles. I know this isn't the work of man. We are a bunch of 18, 19, 20 year olds which is why this sounds so crazy to some people. But when we trust in the Lord's plans and let ourselves become His instruments, do what He would do if He was here, people change their lives for this, people become converted to His gospel because there is no other way to really be happy forever.
- I played the piano yesterday in sacrament again and holy cow. I was "wrong noteing" it up all over the place. Haha so bad. Señor Te Necesito had never sounded so beautiful.

I love you guys!

Hermana Meg Chalmers

Happy 22nd birthday to my favorite sister, Courtney on April 13, 2014

News and other good stuff from Chile

Hey guys,                                                                                                                April 14, 2014
Some fun things that happened this week-
-We found this new investigator when we were knocking doors in the richest part of our sector. She is the nanny at this super nice house and sneaks us in while the owners aren't home because they are agnostic. It is hilarious. But don't worry we have switched our teaching to her actual house so we don't break any chileno laws.
- We had lunch this week with Hermana Gladis in the ward that served a mission when she was younger. She is one of the coolest people ever. She was the most dedicated missonary and really let it shape her whole life. She has never stopped serving and strengthening her testimony, even after she left the mission field. She told us this story about how her husband served a mission as well but let the world catch up to him when he got home and he ended up going inactive. She is so grateful for her trials even still. She has a goal to serve a mission when she is older in Salt Lake. I love her a lot.
- We had exchanges this week with the Sister Trainer Leaders on the rainiest day of the week. I worked with Hna Soria from Argentina. She is awesome and always so excited and positive about the work so we had a lot of fun. We ended up finding a family of four! We taught them the Restoration and they were so interested and asking all kinds of questions about the priesthood. It made me so excited. Teaching families reminds me why I am here and that every family needs to know that they can be together forever. It is available to every family in the world!
- I got your package, Mom! WHOOOO. Cadbury Mini Eggs are THE BEST. That cute cup you sent me with the norwhal on it was a hit as well. Haha thanks a ton.
- All the members like to hook us up with french fries for lunch here. They kind of just use the missionaries over for lunch as an excuse to eat whatever they want so we eat papas fritas like it is going out of style.
Love you guys a ton!
Love always,
Hermana Megan Chalmers Jr.

 - My twin in the mission. I get told like every other day that Hermana Davidson and I look exactly the same. haha
 - Lota, the town that's about 45 mins away by bus where we have our district and zone meetings every week.

                                                                         Birthday Package!
                                          - Me and Hermana Henderson having fun with the camera

Earthquake and Conference

Hey Team!                                                                                                                                 April 7, 2014
I survived the earthquake and tsunami! Crazy stuff, right? Really we didn't feel anything at all down here in Arauco but we were on tsuami alert the entire night. Everyone was evacuating to the hills far away from the ocean and we didn't know a lot of what was going on, but thankfully our neighbors had our backs. They yelled to our windows, "apúrate, apúrate, Danger danger!" Haha. We definitely knew that one was for us. So we grabbed some emergency food and clothes and stayed up at a member's house that was in the safety zone all night with the elders in our area. Presidente didn't want us going to sleep until the alert was lifted so in case of emergency we would be ready to flee for the hills. I won't lie, it was a little freaky. I swear there is nothing scarier than a tsunami but thankfully we didn't have to see what that was like. So we are all right. It was the first all nighter I have pulled in a long time!
Also transfers were today and Hermana Henderson and I are both staying in Arauco. Whoooo! We are so pumped.
Follow up on Mauricio - the guy we met at the outdoor market whose sister's boyfriend passed away- we had a lesson with him and found out he is moving to Santiago this week which is a bummer, but we did get to teach him once, IN ENGLISH. It was so weird. He speaks like an Australian and was using all kinds of English swear words without shame so that was funny.
Also General Conference! I hope you guys got to watch all of it. I really enjoyed all the talks. It called my attention to how often they spoke out families and the importance of strengthening the family. The importance of the simple things, family prayer, scripture study and family home evening. It inspired me to make my focus, work and thoughts more on families here in Chile with the people we are finding and teaching. Focusing on helping people to have the ultimate vision for an eternal family in the temple. I am so grateful for you guys and that we have made those covenants as a family and have those blessings. It is really sad to see so many members of the church here that are the only members in their family. The gospel is for families. We are so blessed to all be members of the church and have each other to support us. Mom and Dad, thanks for always teaching me the importance of the church and helping me to grow up with the gospel as such a huge part of my life. You guys are dee best!
I love you guys.
Love always,
HNA CHALMERS

                                                                           Arauco
Watching conference in our little English room.

Hey team!                                                                                                                              March 31, 2014
Sounds like you guys are living the dream over there. We are really excited for General Conference, too. This week was a little crazy. The Elders had a baptism Saturday and we also had a ward activity that same day, Comidas del Mundo, where everyone cooked their favorite dish from another country or Chile. Hermana Henderson and I made soft pretzels and choco chip cookies by our friend, Betty Crocker. Turns out they were a HIT and all the Hermanas were asking us for the recipe for these cookies. No one REALLY needs to know it's from the bag.
The baptism of the Elders was this dad, Hugo, whose whole family was baptized about a year ago. He asked to have this guy, Hermano Temer, baptize him, but for some reason no one thought of the fact that Hno Temer is like in his 60´s, 5 ft and 100 lbs and Hugo is a really big, tall guy. It was quite the experience to figure that one out. They had Hugo kneel down and even though it was not the most reverent or organized baptism, Hugo was happy and able to be baptized and that is the most important part anyway.

We had the most entertaining lunch this past week with an old lady in the ward, Hermana Clara. We were just talking and I asked her what her hobbies were and she says something along the lines of, "Taking blood out of people, giving shots and well, really anything having to do with blood!" Whaaaat? She then told us all about her life as a nurse in a mental hospital taking care of the "locos," a term she used like it was completely socially acceptable. She also showed us around her house to all the photos she had on the walls of her kids. She had three pictures of Jesus Christ in order on her wall and explained what was happening in each of them one by one. When she got to the third  (the classic picture of Christ resurrected when he appears to Mary Magdalene) we could tell she didn't really know what was going on in the photo so she just said, "Oh and this is when Jesus tells a woman that he is The Living Water and she asks how to obtain eternal life and he says he will help her." Hahah. So close ,Hermana Clara. That is just some of the "Hermana Clara false doctrine" in addition to, "Well two angels came down to help Jose Smith translate the libro de mormon and one of them was Oliver Cowdery, right Hermanas?" Hahah she is hilarious.

Even though it was a stressful week, it was still really great. It helped me to appreciate the little things and take note of the importance of others' feelings. Sometimes I think I get caught up in having everything planned and such and forget that people and their feelings are more important than programs or events.

I love you guys!
Love always,
Hermana Meg

Arauco

Hey fam,                                                                                                                  March 24, 2014
This week Hermana Henderson and I saw a lot of great things happening here in Arauco and some many intances where the Lord is preparing people and blessing us.
So twice this week we hit up the feria (like an outdoor market) in the morning to find some escogidos. We just set up a little table and put some of the pamphlets and pictures we had and started talking to people. It turned out to be so amazing. We had been working really hard on finding people since re opening this sector and this was one of the things we were trying to mix it up. Turns out the feria is the place to be in Arauco. We made friends with a bunch of the people selling things and they were all so nice. I think they secretly felt bad for the two white girls standing in the sun. We got free Mote con Huesillos (I am not really sure how to explain what it is, other than a chileno drink), empanadas and alfajores (a little pastry).
While were there on Saturday morning this guy came up who was walking his bike around and just stood there staring down at the pamphlets not saying anything so we started talking to him and he didnt respond at all and then just looked up asked in English, "Where are you guys from?" and then proceeded to tell us that the day before his sisters boyfriend had passed away suddenly and they were all so confused and lost as to why something like that would happen to them. He said he wasnt sure if God even existed really and he was out looking for answers and he didnt even know why he had come come to the feria that day because he shouldve been with his sister. He said he just wanted to know if his sister could ever even feel joy  or have hope for a good life again. We bore our testimonies to him and talked to him for a while and after we set up a time to see him and his sister and he walked away I was just speechless. I couldve even believed that had happened. It reaffirmed to me why I am here. This guy, Mauricio, and his sister have been so prepared by the Lord in every aspect. Even the fact that he was at the feria for no reason while we were there and that we had even decided to go there, something we had never done before. It was a miracle and such a blessing. If nothing else ever worked out I know everything would be worth it if we could just help Mauricio and his sister to come unto Christ and find hope in Him. We are going to see them tomorrow and I cant wait.
The other day my companion and I were also talking about how as missionaries we go to people's houses and share with them and try to help them and when we leave their houses they still continue living their lives. They still have their problems and trials. There are some menos activos in our ward, Ema and Nibaldo. They are an older couple and she has had Parkinsons really bad for the last 5 years or so and is so bitter and unhappy about her situation and doesn't understand why those things have happened to her. Her husband, Nibaldo has to help her do every single thing and you can just tell he is so tired all the time. We had a lesson with them yesterday and one of their sons who is in his 40's was visiting. Everyone really opened up about what was hard for them in their current situation and their son really called them all to repentance in a way. That they both need to decide to be happy and look for the best in situations because our situations do not determine our happiness. We didn't even really say a whole lot during that lesson and I think sometimes as missionaries we don't need to really say anything. We need to help people feel the spirit and give them the opportuninity to open up and come to their own conclusions. To create an environment where the spirit is present. I realize more and more everyday how little we actually do in the conversion of others and how dependant we are on the spirit. We are just instruments for the Lord. Without it, there would be no success, no conversion, nothing. But that when we do work with the Spirit there is so much power and so much change. It is so awesome that I get to do this everyday.
I love you guys a ton. Thanks for everything!
Love always,
Hermana Chalmers

Hey team,                                                                                                                    March 17, 2014
It has been an awesome week. One of the best weeks I have ever had I think. Hermana Henderson and I tried to give it everything we had all week long. We get along really well and so we knew we had to crack down if we wanted to do the work well and help this sector progress. We even wrote all over our agendas and such "Maquina Week 2014" like a bunch of squares. But it was really great to see all the blessing and miracles that came when we did our part and worked hard. Exact obedience brings miracles! I think the best part of this week was the fact that we found this 24 year old, who we have been teaching and wants to get baptized. He is probably one of the sketchiest people I have ever met, but he surprises us every day. After our first lesson we left him with the Book of Mormon to read 2 Nefi 31 and he read that, the intro, all the testimonies and the first four chapters of the book of mormon. Whoooo! We were so excited. He told us about how he had been talking with God all morning and He told him to keep listening to the missionaries because it is time for him to get his life in order. We took him to a baptism in Lota (about 45 minutes away in bus) because he really wanted to see one before his own baptism and it was the funniest experience. We were practically running to make it on time and then he tells us that he hasnt eaten all day and HAS to go buy some cookies. Then once we get there he asks a member if there is any coffee or ecco or something he could have. So then right as the baptism is starting this member runs in and sneaks the ecco to the guy so he was just slurpin on some ecco and cookies all through the baptism. Haha he also doesn't know how to whisper so that has been hilarious.
On the bus he dropped the bomb on us that he has a girlfriend, a 5 year old son and another on the way. He also told us about how he got a dog bite earlier in the week because he hit a dog when he was drunk. So that was nice. He came to church on Sunday, and the members all had a lot to say about him to us. Arauco is a really small town so everyone knows everyone and every joven in the branch knew all about him. Apparently he has a bad past and they were all worried about us. I really do believe that he has a real desire to learn and change and is developing a testimony of the church. We are passing him to the Elders in our area to continue teaching him, which is hard, but we know it is best and there are more people out there for us to teach. As long as he is able to continue learning about the gospel and repenting, it doesn't matter which missionaries are teaching him.
This week I taught almost every joven we talked to how to say, "boom. roasted."
I also made a list of "things that mean a lot more to me now" than they did before I left on my mission. I want to send it to you guys next week. I love the mission so much and it is helping me in every aspect of my life to change and become better.
Also it has made me realize the things I took for granted before, one of them being SHAG CARPET.
I love you guys!

A month's worth of letters and pictures

March 10, 2014
Ayooooo! Hoy tengo 6 meses en la misión! Yo no se como el tiempo pasa tan rápido! But the best part was that I got to hear where Cam is going on his mission today. WHOOOOO! I am so pumped for him! Michigan is going to get C Twiced so hard.
This week has been great, but definitely crazy. We had a big mission conference in Los Angeles a couple hours away from our area and we had to wake up at 5am and take a bus to get there on time but it was so great. Presidente Martinez spoke to us and showed pictures of his baptism when he was 18. Then he brought up two gringos that came with him and it was his missionaries that baptised him! It was so amazing. They talked a lot about how the blessing and fruits of missionary service sometimes aren't seen until later, until afterwards.
Also the other day we did some contacts in the plaza. So we go up to talk this group of jovenes and they said they had been busy making some crazy raps so we asked to hear an example and they made up a classic rap something like, "hemos visto, hermana chalmers es escrito, habla de Jesucristo..." and I cant remember anymore but I felt preeettttyy cool.
The other day we went to contact this referral of a member. It was this menos activo and her boyfriend that isn't a member. It was so sad to talk to her because she just kept telling us over and over how she never thought she would be inactive and she used to never miss a sunday and she has been through the temple and everything. She told us how when she started living with her boyfriend and their two kids she got her rights taken away in the church and she is too ashamed to come back. She said everytime she sees her temple clothes she cries. It was really sad listening to her and seeing the look in her eyes of being so dissappointed at the point she is in her life. We are going to work with her to help her start coming to church again. The gospel isn't for the perfect. It is for those who need help like Claudia.
I was reading a talk the other day and I really liked a line that said, "life is hard, not the gospel."
I love you guys!
Love always,
Hermana Chalmers

Hey Team,
I love Arauco so much! It is the coolest little town. We live right on the coast, we went running one morning and ran to the beach and it only took like 15-20 minutes. It reminds me in a way of Sun Valley ID, but Chileno style so definitely not as fancy. I really do love it here though. The people are great too. I dont know what it is about a small town but the people are all slightly crazy and it is hilarious. We went out with a member, Hermana Campos, who is about 80 years old, to visit some of her vecinos that are inactive. We go up to the gate (evert house here is surrounded by a gate so if it is locked you just yell "Alooo" to knock) and Hna Campos all within like 30 seconds screams, "Aloooo!" ... "Hola!" ... "HERMANA!" and then she picked up a rock and threw it in between the gate at the door so they would answer. So so funny.
Also there is a lady in our ward that is originally from St. George. Jerry Tucker. She served a mission here and then came back and got married and has lived here for like 10 years, maybe Sister Webb knows her or something.
My companion, Hermana Kristin Henderson, is awesome. She just turned 22 and we get along really well. Sometimes we have to watch ourselves because we think a lot of the same things are really funny and we will catch ourselves cracking up at things when we shouldn't be. She is also going to BYU after the mission along with every companion I have had, haha so that will be great.
Ask Derek Downey if he knows an Elder Brand from Chile from his mission. He is our branch president here in Arauco and he served his mission in New York around the same time as Derek. Also he somehow gets Dr. Pepper over here so lunch at his house this past week was the best ever.
The other day we were walking to an appointment and we passed this family with buckets of blackberries so we asked them where they got them. Turns out they had just gone out to the campo (like the countryside) and picked them wild. They let us try some and we were probably over reacting at how good they were so they gave us a whole bucket! Yeah! It was the greatest blessing because it was a Sunday and we were completely out of food at the house.
I am so excited to be here and I know that this sector has so much potential. The members are so willing to work hard with us, we just have to help them know what they are supposed to do and teach them how to do it. Also, CONGRATS CAM!! BYU!
Love you guys a ton!

Fam! CAMBIOS! I am leaving Temuco-Cautin. So crazy! I am going to Arauco. It is in the North of our mission right on the coast an hour or two South of Concepcion. I am so excited. My companion is Hermana Henderson. She is from California and is Hermana Fonsecas really good friend in the mission. I am so excited! I leave tomorrow and even though I will miss Cautin and Hermana Fonseca I know that this is another opportunity to learn and grow in new ways.
This last week in Cautin has been so great. First off, SERGIO GOT BAPTIZED! I don't know if I have told you about him but he is the fiance of a member who used to be less active but is now coming back to church. He is 22 and is so great. I have never seen someone change so much is so little time. He had a lot of things he had to work on and repent about to be baptized and this past Saturday he got an interview with Presidente Martinez and passed and got baptized a couple hours later that same day. It was the craziest day but also one of the greatest days of all my mission. Sergio was so excited and grateful the whole day. He is a really tender guy and after he got baptized he shared his testimony with everyone and just started to bawl and say how he couldnt even begin to say how grateful he was for the gospel and the people that have helped him to be baptized. I will send pictures!
Also, I played piano yesterday in sacrament meeting. Thanks mom for making me take piano lessons. I knew it was for something. Haha. But really it was last minute because the hermano that usually plays the piano didnt show up so I just had to cross my fingers that I could get by.
I have learned so much in Cautin but I am really excited to go North. There are so many changes in the mission and I am learning to welcome them because each one is really an opportunity for me to change and to become better than I was before.
Love you guys a ton!
